Over the course of the last two years, a campaign of ethnic cleansing has killed over 400,000 people in the Darfur region of Sudan. As many as 500 people continue to die each day. In addition, according to UN estimates, more than 200,000 refugees have been registered in neighboring Chad and more than 2 million people are internally displaced in Sudan itself.
Citizens for Global Solutions recommends five steps to help end the genocide in Darfur:
1. President Bush should back his words with action and constructively engage the international community.
2. The U.S. should engage with Arab and Muslim leaders.
3. The president should work with UN Secretary General Kofi
Annan to appoint a Special UN Envoy on Darfur to coordinate a global effort. He should also appoint a U.S. special representative whose sole responsibility is to make the Darfur crisis a top priority.
4. The international community should provide adequate support to the African Union (AU) mission in Darfur until a stronger mission headed by the United Nations can arrive.
5. It is important for the U.S. to support the International Criminal Court’s investigation in Darfur.
